Overview

The event.

The Gold Coast Marathon is Australia's fastest, flattest, sunniest major marathon. Held every July along the Queensland coastline, it has become the country's premier destination for first-time marathoners and PB hunters alike. The course threads through the beachfront suburbs of Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Main Beach and Burleigh Heads, on almost entirely closed roads with sweeping ocean views the whole way. It carries World Athletics Elite Label status, drawing an international elite field alongside tens of thousands of amateur runners across the marathon, half marathon and shorter distances.

Race weekend is a festival. Live music, cheer stations and a start line packed with runners in every stage of their journey, first-timers alongside sub-3 chasers. The winter light is soft, the temperature is generally mild, and the surf runs right beside you.

Who it suitsFirst-time marathoners, runners chasing a Boston or big-city qualifier, and anyone who wants a friendly, flat, well-supported introduction to the distance.

Philippe's Coaching Perspective

What I'd focus on.

Gold Coast Marathon rewards patience. The runners who go out at goal pace from kilometre one almost always pay for it in the final third. Start conservative, build into it, and race the second half.

The most under-trained element I see is long-run pacing discipline. Long runs shouldn't be a weekly time-trial. They're where you teach your body to burn fuel efficiently and stay smooth when tired.

In the final six to eight weeks, race-specific work matters more than volume. If you're arriving under-recovered, you're arriving under-prepared.
